Wildlife and Adventure Articles

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 29, 2011, 3:51 AM
l Facebook l Tumblr l YouTube l

I meant for this journal to be longer with more content when I thought of writing it, so I guess I will have to come back later and add to it when it comes back to me. =P
For now, I want to share just two things. One is an article and the other is just some thoughts.

I wrote an article recently for an adventure and travel media website run by Nick Zantop called Let's Be Wild and I would be honored if any of you would take the time to read it and to also perhaps visit some of the other articles that can be found on the site. You can read my piece here: [link] I plan on writing a second piece soon focusing on the Slave River, the surrounding area, and especially the wildlife...Which brings me to my next thing...

...After recently taking a good long look through my folder of wildlife .raw files (nearly a thousand of them) I realized just how much I love photographing, observing and interacting with wildlife. I decided that I must spend much, much more time doing it and that I need to spend more time in places I am likely to encounter different species. I get noticed by the wildlife I observe a lot. I keep a pretty low profile so as to not disturb them much but wild animals are so perceptive. I am constantly amazed by the range and the dynamic of their behaviors. As I mentioned to a fellow deviant recently, I love to go unnoticed by them but it is very special for me when they look straight down the big eye of my lens and show their awareness of my presence.  So...through this next year, while continuing to do my "regular" work, I plan on especially focusing on the wildlife and building on my wildlife portfolio. I want to explore the depths, to understand and relate to the creatures who have been such an integral part of my photography and my life. They have been my muse and they have tested my limits, showing me things about myself that I might never have known. So here is a tribute to them and to everybody who truly appreciates our wild friends out there.

Thomas Koidhis
Canada
23 year old photographer, writer, philosopher, naturalist, visionary and aspiring filmmaker from Fort Smith, NT

The society we have described can never grow into a reality or see the light of day, and there will be no end to the troubles of states, or indeed, my dear Glaucon, of humanity itself, till philosophers are kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands, while the many natures now content to follow either to the exclusion of the other are forcibly debarred from doing so. This is what I have hesitated to say so long, knowing what a paradox it would sound; for it is not easy to see that there is no other road to happiness, either for society or the individual.

-Plato, Republic

Somebody who only reads newspapers and at best books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who scorns eyeglasses. He is completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of his times, since he never gets to see or hear anything else. And what a person thinks on his own without being stimulated by the thoughts and experiences of other people is even in the best case rather paltry and monotonous. There are only a few enlightened people with a lucid mind and style and with good taste within a century. What has been preserved of their work belongs among the most precious possessions of mankind. We owe it to a few writers of antiquity (Plato, Aristotle, etc.) that the people in the Middle Ages could slowly extricate themselves from the superstitions and ignorance that had darkened life for more than half a millennium. Nothing is more needed to overcome the modernist's snobbishness.

- Albert Einstein, 1954

Hello Friends!

My name is Thomas Koidhis. I was born in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. I have lived in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories for about 13 years, give or take a couple spent in Kemptville, Ontario. I am of Greek, Scottish, Irish and American Indigenous descent, with perhaps some others along the line there. Thank you for visiting and welcome to my page everyone!

I have been photographing the land and sky for going on 5 years now. My interest in photography started with a fascination with the natural world and reality around me, the individuals in it and the relationship between the two.

I am convinced that everything is profoundly connected in the most fundamental way. I also think that in being ignorant of this connection, humans have taken our natural world and its inhabitants for granted, including ourselves! We are doing a very good job of inflicting massive amounts of damage to our natural ecosystems, water cycles and atmosphere. Ignorance, credulity and fear are rampant and I intend on doing whatever is in my power to illuminate these issues.

Fortunately, even if we managed to end ourselves and took a good portion of living networks with us, life would go on without us. Things don't have to go all the way down that road - we still have the choice to stay on for the ride.

BUT I sorta kinda managed to pull myself out of that strange vortex and am currently rubbing my eyes, blinking into the unusually bright light of proper self-awareness and actually slowly starting to utter coherent words and thoughts again. Go figure! ;)

Gee, sorry for that unexpected delay. Life has offered all sorts of craziness and, naturally, double-minded me had to jump on the mood swing-train to 'enjoy' my share of at least three contradictory and not altogether too mature emotions. Haha!

omg ok I'm going to send you an email for REALZ this time, will try to finish it today. I been hermit mode, maybe were both a little crazy? I have been extraaa antisocial lmao, you should see how many messages I have backed up on here and everywhere else. It's crazy what happens if I go a month or more without keeping up with the waterfall or whatever you'd please to liken it to =P It's like I'm uber popular but can't see why as I am feeling more like the grinch than anything lately hahaha..Am hoping the weather has stopped teasing already and it's ACTUALLY getting warm now, have had a temperature hike again lately (above zero, w00t!) Anyways, I hope I can manage to put all that into greater detail in some coherent way when I email you, as if either of us care or can do anything about coherence on the whole at the moment =P I hope you had an especially lovely and relaxing time off :) ttys!!

yeah, you'd better, I won't be able to tell ya all the crazy stuff that has been happening recently cos the older oddities get always replaced by new ones fast and I can't judge any longer which ones are more gaga :spin:; while I can speak hermit mode fluently by now I gotta admit I missed you dearly and I feel I'm getting dumber by the seconds cos of our lack of talk :fear:, soon I will think I'm a squirrel or something (not a bad idea as such, it would just minorly interfere with my job, hahaha); I happen to love the grinch, btw , and yes, you are too popular for you own good, hate to say I told you so :nana:; glad the weather is nice (here it is too); coherence isn't a must-have, you know that already, but nowadays, it even bothers me..so please, be as incoherent as you want to, I shall enjoy it one way or another!! :blowkiss:...oh yes, about my off days: there was trouble as usual; whenever I can behave myself, others can't; I have a couple of off days now too and guess what - I lost my voice! (an improvement, some would say but not you, aye? ;) )...Not funny!...Oh well...half-funny. More of this in my reply to your reply. :tighthug:

Your entire gallery is awesome in beauty, very impressive. I think you have very good taste; you are one of the best nature photographers that I have come across on deviantArt!!! :D also I like the philosophical quotes you have :) we are studying Socrates and dialogues written by Plato in my Classical studies at high school at the moment. Keep photographing, it's very appreciated ;D
